From the South
Take Route 95 north to the "Bath-Brunswick-Coastal Route 1" exit. Follow Route 1 North through the town of Thomaston (apx. 1 hour). In Thomaston, go through two sets of lights; you will see the Knox Mansion up to your right at the 2nd set of lights. Apx. one mile from the 2nd set of lights turn right on to Buttermilk Lane. Follow Buttermilk to the end (apx. 3 miles), and turn left onto Route 73. The Museum is less than 1/2 mile up on the right. See About Parking, below.
From the North
Follow a map to Rockland, Maine. (U.S. Route 1 South and Route 17 East both lead directly into Rockland). If you are coming by way of I-95 South to 17 East out of Augusta, see the directions for coming From the West. Otherwise, follow Route 1 South into Rockland. You'll pass shopping plazas for Wal-Mart and Staples, and then McDonald's and Burger King. Go through the lights with McDonald's on the right and Burger King to the left. Proceed around a sharp bend to the right and then another bend immediately to the left. Go through the next set of lights (Fleet Bank on the left) to another set of lights (Camden National Bank on the left.) Turn left at these lights (on to Park Street) and get into the right lane, and immediately turn right at the next lights. You are now on Route 73. (In the opposite direction is Main Street Rockland, with easy access to restaurants, art galleries and retailers, the Farnsworth Art Museum and the Shore Village Museum.) Proceed up Route 73 for apx. 2.5 miles. After apx. 2 miles you will see signs for a left-hand turn to the town of Owls Head, the Knox County Airport and the Owls Head Lighthouse. Do not take this left. Proceed on Route 73 for apx. 1/2 mile. You will see a sign for the Museum on the left. See About Parking, below.
From the West
From Augusta, take Route 17 East. If you are coming from west of Augusta, including from I-95, take Western Avenue (Route 202 East.) Proceed, through several sets of lights, to the first rotary. Go 180 degrees around the rotary, exit, and go over the Memorial Bridge to a 2nd Rotary. There is a spur on the right just before the 2nd rotary that you can use to by-pass the rotary. Take this spur, which puts you on to Stone Street (if you miss the spur, go 360 degrees around the rotary back to the Stone Street exit.) Follow Stone Street to the first set of lights and turn left on to Route 17 (apx. 1/4 mile.) Follow Route 17 east for apx. 42 miles into Rockland. Landmarks include the intersection of Routes 17 and 90 (apx. 5 miles from Rockland) and a set of lights at the intersection of Route 17 and Old County Road, with Kaler's Store on the right (at about the 40 mile mark). Proceed through these lights, and through the stop sign about 1/2 mile ahead. Go through another set of lights (Shop & Save on left), on to the next set of lights (McDonald's on your left, Burger King across the street.) Turn right. Stay on this road around a sharp bend to the right and then another bend immediately to the left. Go through the next lights (Fleet Bank on the left) to another set of lights (with Camden National Bank on the left.) Turn left at these lights (on to Park Street) and get into the right lane, and immediately turn right at the next lights. You are now on Route 73. (In the opposite direction is Main Street Rockland, with restaurants, art galleries and retailers, the Farnsworth Art Museum and the Shore Village Museum.) Proceed up Route 73 for apx. 2.5 miles.
About Parking
The Museum entrance is located on Route 73. The access road joining Route 73 and the Museum is apx. 1/2 mile long. During events, we will often have cars parked all the way up the access road. On those days we run a shuttle bus from the top of the access road to the Museum entrance every 10 minutes. We will have traffic managers directing parking, and directing you to the bus stop. We encourage you to wait for the bus at the top of the access road. If you have a question, ask one of the traffic managers (in the orange vests). The Bus Stop is marked, and the wait for the bus is very brief. On less busy days follow the access road to the Museum parking lot.
By Air
Fly into Knox County Airport. If you are flying in during an event, contact one of the FBOs. They will direct you to a ramp, and will contact the Museum to send our Airport Taxi to pick you up. We will return you to the airport when you are ready to leave.
If you are flying in on a non-event day, you may taxi over to the Museum down the grass flightline and park in front of the Museum. Have one of the FBOs notify us that you are coming, and we will have someone looking out for your arrival.
To the Owls Head Lighthouse
Owls Head is home to one of the most beautiful and most photographed lighthouses in America. To get to the lighthouse, follow the directions above for coming from the west or North. Follow Route 73 out of Rockland to the signs for the Lighthouse (apx. 2 miles from Rockland.) Turn left and proceed into Owls Head Village (apx. 2 miles). Turn left at the village (by the Owls Head General Store and Post Office). Proceed down the hill towards the water and look for a sign for the lighthouse. Turn left and follow that road to the parking area at end of the road. |
