As part of the Camden-Rockport-Lincolnville Chamber of Commerce's "Christmas by the Sea" weekend (Dec. 5-7), the Owls Head Transportation Museum will host its annual family holiday concert featuring the Midcoast Community Band. As part of the festivities, children of all ages are encouraged to bring their letters to Santa and see exactly how their letters are delivered to the North Pole.
The fun starts at noon on Sunday as children will create their own holiday ornaments, some made from candy. At 1:00, everyone will step outside to view Santa's arrival from the North Pole in one of the Museum's planes. Upon landing, Santa will meet with children in the Museum's auditorium for a reading of "Reindeer Christmas."
Then, with help from a local U.S. Postal Service mail carrier and one of Santa's helpers (Museum pilot Karl Erickson), children will see with their own eyes how their letters are delivered to Santa at the North Pole. All letters will be placed in a special "Polar Air Mail Express" bag, then literally scooped up (by plane) and delivered directly to the North Pole. This demonstration will take place outside on Runway 17, weather permitting.
Once the letters are safely on their way, Santa will lead the children back inside and introduce the Mid-Coast Community Band as they hold their annual holiday concert from 2:00 to 3:30. Museum admission is free all day, and the Museum Store will be open for convenient holiday shopping. Light refreshments will be served, and ample parking is available.
